NEOGA 2008
February: Pat Williamson, Judy Peters, & Lindsay McQueen made wheat bread with the 1st grade students at Neoga.
March: CCFB held four workshops for students K-3rd. All programs blended agriculture & Dr. Seuss in celebration of his 104th birthday.
Kindergarten was read “Green Eggs & Ham”, and learned about the poultry and pork industry. The students received a plastic green egg with a pig shaped eraser inside provided by the National Pork Board. They also were given a green egg and ham tic-tac-toe board, & Poultry Ag Mag to take home.
1st graders were read “Hop on Pop”, and learned about the corn industry. The students snacked on corn pops while listening to the story. Afterwards they were all given a sheet of bubble wrap and at once, we all hopped & popped! 1st graders took home a Corn Ag Mag to read with their parents.
2nd grade students were read “Mr. Brown Can Moo, Can You”, and learned about the dairy industry. In this interactive program, students made the various noises mentioned in the book. They also made butter by adding heavy whipping cream, and a dash of salt into a container, attaching a lid, and shaking it for nearly 10 minutes. We then spread the mixture onto crackers and enjoyed the product of our labor!
3rd grade was read “Oh Say Can You Seed”, and learned about the soybean industry. They then made “beanie baby” necklaces which include Soil Moist, water, and two soybeans. Students could keep these necklaces and over a week’s time, watch the development and germination of the seed as it starts to grow into a plant. 3rd graders were given Soybean Ag Mags to take home and read with their families.

HUNTER SAFETY COURSE
March 21-22: 57 participants from all over Cumberland County signed up for a 2-day course on Hunter Safety. This course is required by the state in order for a hunter to receive his/her green card. The students learned about general safety, proper use of a gun, state laws, and much more! The event was sponsored by the Cumberland County Farm Bureau Wildlife Committee who provided all the snacks, meals, and drinks for the event. The committee also collected generous contributions from The Quail Shed & Little Wabash. These two businesses donated 4-$25 hunts to participants who scored a perfect on their test. Congratulations to those winners. A big thank you to Greenup Archery, Cumberland Sportsman’s Club, The Quail Shed, & Little Wabash.
